Deluxe XP Mantis tiller: my air filters are clogged/dirty, how do I replace them?

It is important to check and change the air filters from time to time. Follow our maintenance tips here.

Clean air filters will ensure optimum performance of your Mantis Tiller. Once dirt infiltrates the fibers of the air filter, the possibility of your engine seizing from dirt ingestion increases.

In the Deluxe XP, there are two air filters: the black pre-air filter and the white one.

To clean the white air filter, put some pure oil on it, let it dry and blow it with a compressor.

To clean the black pre-air filter, put it in soapy water, let it dry and grease it with a few drops of oil (you can use oil from the machine or from our bottles). The air filter always needs to stay greasy.

New air filters are available here and here.

To check / change the air filter, this is how to proceed:

a) Unscrew the cap:

b) Remove the black pre-air filter:

c) Remove the white air filter and change it:

d) Change the pre-air filter and put it back.

My Deluxe XP Mantis tiller does not start. Check the fuel pipes and filter

If your tiller does not start anymore, you have to check if the pipes and/or the fuel filter are not clogged.

Also, if fuel has been left in the tank more than 30 days, you have to check if the pipes and/or the fuel filter don't need to be changed (they become porous).

a) If the fuel pipes or the fuel filter are clogged or porous, you have to change them. To do so, it is possible for you to buy a set of replacement fuel pipe and filter here.

It consists of the fuel filter and the two fuel pipes. It DOES NOTINCLUDE the fuel grommet so you have to keep the one already on the machine.

To do this, you will need a small flat screwdriver.

b) Take off the grommet by using a screwdriver:

c) Put the pipes through the fuel grommet as follow:

d) Put back the pipes on the carburettor as follow:

e) Insert the fuel filter in the tank and put back the fuel grommet in the intended hole:

4-stroke Mantis tiller: my tiller is running too fast or lacks power, what shall I do?

The tiller is running too fast

How to loose the throttle cable:

tighten the cable

The Mantis tiller lacks power

You might need to tighten the throttle cable:

Do the reverse process explained above:

1) Loosen the lower bolt to pull the elbow-shaped pipe up to tighten the cable

2) Tighten the upper bolt to secure the assembly

You might need to check your air filter: follow our maintenance tips here

You can either clean it with soapy water and grease it with oil.

If you need to change it, please follow the instructions here.

My 4-stroke Mantis tiller does not start. Check and change the fuel pipes and/or fuel filter

If your machine does not start, you have to check if the pipes and/or the fuel filter are not clogged.

Also, if fuel has been left in the tank more than 30 days, you have to check if the pipes and/or the fuel filter don't need to be changed (they become porous).

Important: The 2 fuel pipes and the fuel filter are available in the Kitpipe here but the fuel grommet IS NOT available in the kitpipe. You have to reuse the one on the machine.

1.These are the parts you have received (3 pipes, 1 fuel filter):

To do this, you will need a small flat screwdriver to take off the fuel grommet.

2. Put the long black pipe on one side of the grommet and the short black pipe on the other side of the grommet as follow:

3. Add the yellow pipe next to the short black pipe. Here is what you should have:

4. Insert the fuel filter in the tank and put the grommet in this same opening:

5. This is how to put the pipes on the carburettor (yellow pipe above):

2-stroke Mantis tiller: my tiller is running too fast or lacks power, what shall I do?

  • The carburettor might need to be adjusted (instructions here)

2-stroke Mantis tiller: my machine does not start, how to change the fuel pipes and/or filter

If your machine does not start, you have to check if the pipes and/or the fuel filter are not clogged.

Also, if some mixture has been left in the tank more than 30 days, you have to check if the pipes and/or the fuel filter don't need to be changed (they become porous).

The filter should be changed when it is hard to the touch or if it creases or fuel does not reach the carburettor.

The 2-stroke Kitpipe is available here. It contains 2 black pipes, 1 transparent pipe, 1 fuel filter and 1 fuel grommet:

To do this, you will need a small flat screwdriver to take off the fuel grommet.

1.Put the pipes through the grommet as you can see from the pictures below:  The short black pipe (valve pipe) and the transparent pipe (return fuel pipe) must be next to each other. They have to stick out from the grommet of about 5 mm on the inside, where the grommet will go into the fuel tank:

2. Put the fuel filter on the long black pipe. Be careful on which side you are putting it. The filter will have to fit into the fuel tank:

3. Put the valve on the short black pipe as follow.

Here is what you will obtain:

4. Enter the fuel filter into the fuel tank:

5. Put the grommet in the hole provided for such purpose:

2-stroke Mantis tiller: how to replace the spark plug if fouled, shorted or broken

The spark plug on your Mantis tiller needs to be changed every year (please follow our maintenance tips here).

Also, if the machine does not start, it may be because the spark plug is fouled or shorted and you have to change it. New spark plugs are available here or in our handy kit here for SV4 and here for SV6 Mantis tillers.

Important:

NGK and Champion spark plugs are the only recommended spark plugs to be used in Echo engines. The use of the correct type, brand, and heat range is very important in today's emission certified engines. Never use spark plug manufacturers cross-reference charts. Cross-reference charts are approximations.

The plug will depend on the SV number on your engine; the gap will be the same for each engine – .024-.028.

The SV number of your engine is located between the feul tank and the carburettor, on a black and silver tab on the silver engine housing. It will consist of the letters "SV," a number and another letter. Example: SV4A, SV4B1E.

How to change the spark plug:

You will need a spanner of 19:

a) Take off the cap:

b) Unscrew the spark plug with a spanner of 19 (spark plug spanners are available here for your Mantis tiller)

c) change the spark plug

2-stroke Mantis tiller: my air filter is clogged/dirty, how do I change it?

It is important to check regularly the air filters. Follow our maintenance tips here

Clean air filters will ensure optimum performance of your Mantis Tiller. Once dirt infiltrates the fibers of the air filter, the possibility of your engine seizing from dirt ingestion increases.

Important: If you just need to clean the air filter, do so with pure fuel.

If you need to change the air filter, find it here for SV4 Mantis tillers and here for SV6 Mantis tillers and follow the isntructions below.

1)Remove the Wing Nut to take off the air filter cover.

4-stroke Mantis tiller: how to check the level of oil

An engine can't run without oil and encounters problems with too much oil: the engine starts smoking, the starter rope gets blocked, oil is leaking…

The correct level of oil should not exceed the thread pitch as shown below by the tip of the screwdriver.

the proper oïl level on Mantis Tiller

Please, do not put more than 60 ML of oil in the tank.

All tillers: download a new instruction manual

Go to this page to find the manual you need and download it on your computer.

At the end of each manual, you will find an exploded view of your machine with the names of the spare parts (very handy if you need to change one of these parts). The manual includes advice, gardening and maintenance tips. Do not hesitate to read it.

4-stroke Mantis tiller: my machine smokes, there is too much oil in it, how do I clean it?

If your machine smokes, if oil flows through the air filter or of the rope is blocked, there is too much oil in the machine. Sometimes, when the machine does not start, it can also be because of an excess of oil in the reservoir.

It is important not to put more than 60ml: click here to see how to be sure to put the right level of oil.

You will need an Allen wrench of 5mm:

If you have put more than 60ml of oil in your Mantis tiller, proceed in the following manner:

a) Unscrew the red cover:

b) You will see the spark plug. Take it off and if there is oil on it, please clean it with a metal brush:

c) Unscrew the two bolts on top:

d) Lift the valve with a screw driver:

e) You will see two "springs" called "valve cover gaskets". There should be oil covering them. If there is oil there, it means that there is also oil in the air filter and in the exhaust. Please clean the air filter in soapy water. After, soak it with several drops of oil. The air filter needs to stay greasy. If it needs to be changed, please follow the instructions here.

The exhaust will also need to be cleaned by soaking it in fuel or blowing it. It is also possible to run the machine without it.

f) Empty the oil covering these valve cover gaskets and pull the starter cord several times until no more oil appears:

g) Blow with a compressor on the valve cover gaskets. If you don't have any compressor, let the engine on its side for 30 to 45 minutes to evacuate all the excess of oil.

h) Put the parts back together. Your machine is ready to be used.

The engine might smoke a little, it is normal and should stop once the excess of oil has been completely evacuated.

2-stroke Mantis tiller: how to adjust the carburettor if the machine lacks power or is out of control

You need to adjust the screws of the carburettor as follow:

a) Screw the adjustment screws H and L thoroughly without forcing (if you go too far, there is a risk of permanently deteriorating the carburettor )

b) Unscrew the two screws one turn and a quarter (pre adjustment)

c) Tighten screw H (do not leave the blades before starting the engine)

d) Screw tightly the speed screw (screw with the spring)

adjust carburetor 2 stroke. 4

e) Start the engine. It will be overspeeding,  that is why you have to take off the blades.

f) Unscrew progressively the speed screw. If the machine loses power while unscrewing, screw or unscrew screw L.

g) When the speed screw is correctly adjusted, stop adjusting screw L and put your screwdriver on screw H and your finger on the throttle triangle until it stops. If the machine loses power in between, screw or unscrew screw H to give power to the engine.

h) Once acceleration is adjusted, turn off the machine and start again immediately. The adjustment will be ok if, when starting the machine, the idle is OK and when pushing on the throttle lever, the engine accelerates. You can then put back the blades and start working in the garden!

Important:

In accordance with current EPA Regulations and CARB requirements, limiter caps have been installed on the high and low screws of the carburettor. Removal of these caps by anyone other than an authorized Mantis dealer will void your warranty.

Replacement carburettor, rebuild kits and gasket/diaphragm kits are available. Please contact us directly.

To order parts, you will need the SV# of the engine (go here to know where to find it)

2-stroke Mantis tiller: my machine does not start, what shall I do, does the coil need to be changed?

The coil is rarely involved when the Mantis tiller breaks down. It is rare that the coil fails as it is completely sealed and electronic. The coil is a very low sparking one and can only be properly tested with a 3-point ignition tester. You will not see or feel a spark by grounding the plug.

There are three parts to check on your Mantis tiller if your machine does not start:

1) First, check if the exhaust is not obstructed.

Engine SV4: To check the exhaust of the SV4 Engine, remove the 3 screws above to have access to the exhaust grid which must be obstructed. Remove this grid and try to start the engine one more time.

Engine SV6: To check the exhaust of the SV6 Engine, you just have to insert a small hose to unblock the exhaust. If it doesn't unblock, you have to change the whole exhaust. If it unblocks, try to start the engine again.

Example: Some bees look for heat and nest in the exhausts as you can see from the pictures below (Sv4 exhaust on the left and SV6 exhaust on the right). That is why you always have to check the exhaust of your machine before using it.

clogged exhaust

Clogged exhaust

2) If, despite the exhaust unblocked, the engine doesn't start or if there are liquid leaking from the air filter, you have to check the membranes of the carburettor. They must need to be changed (follow the instructions to change the membranes here). Kits are available here and here.

Indeed, if your machine has been stored away for a few months with even a small amount of old fuel (older than 30 days) in the tank, it can clog the carburettor and cause deterioration of the gaskets and diaphragms.

3) The fuel pipes need also to be checked. If mixture has been left, they may have become porous and unusable. Please find our Kitpipe here and instructions to change the pipes here

Please, follow these instructions to clean your machine:

a) Drain out the old fuel and dispose of it properly.

b) Once the fuel tank is empty, push the primer bulb on your tiller 7 or 8 times to clear out any fuel in the carburettor.

c) Empty the fuel tank again.

d) Next, mix fresh fuel in the correct ratio and fill the fuel tank.

e) Push the primer bulb 11 or 12 times to pull the fresh fuel through the carburettor and let the tiller sit for about thirty (30) minutes.

f) Then press the primer bulb an additional 11 to 12 times to flush out any residue. You should now be able to start your tiller using the standard starting procedure.

Do not use carburettor cleaner. Doing so will void Echo engine manufacturer warranty.

If parts are needed, they are available from www.mantis.uk.com.

4) You might need to change the handle.

Unplug the earth wire.

Start switch on Start (old models before 2006) or O/I (models after 2006)

Start the engine

If it starts, put the plug back. If the machine stops, the handle needs to be changed (available here).

2-stroke Mantis tiller: why is it important to keep the cooling fins clear?

Here are some important information about the Cylinder exhaust port and cooling system .

All cooling fins must be kept clear in order for the engine to operate efficiently.

Here you find the cooling fins on the exhaust port of your Mantis 2-stroke tiller.

2-stroke Mantis tiller: how to locate the serial number?

When ordering parts for your Mantis 2-stroke tiller, you may need to locate the SV number of your engine. It is located between the fuel tank and the carburettor, behind the fuel pipes, on a black and silver tab on the silver engine housing.

It will consist of the letters "SV," a number and another letter.
Examples: SV4A, SV4B1E.

2-stroke Mantis tiller: why is my engine bogging down when I give it full throttle?

Please, see the answer to this question.

2-stroke Mantis tiller: my machine is getting really hot, what is happening?

You may not have enough oil in your fuel mixture to properly lubricate the engine.

Always make sure you use the proper 50:1 mixture ratio. Convenient, pre-measured bottles of premium 2-stroke engine oil are available via our online shopping: 2 stroke oil for Mantis tillers.

Also, there may be a buildup of dirt or debris in the cooling fins of the engine; make sure they are kept clean (see here where these cooling fins are).

2-stroke Mantis tiller: my rope pulls out with no resistance, why won't it turn the engine?

1) There may be some dirt or debris in your pawl catcher assembly causing it to stick.

Remove the 4 screws on the starter assembly and lift it off the tiller. Looking down on the tiller, on top of the flywheel, you will see a gold-colored dish with 2 black levers inside. The levers are called pawl catchers. Use a piece of 80-grit sandpaper and slide it under each pawl. Move the pawl back and forth 10-12 times. This will clean the debris out and smooth the pawls. Replace the starter assembly.

If, despite cleaning the rope, it still does not come back:

2) You have to change the rope and the rewind spring.

a) Unscrew the 4 black screws from the cap of the engine:

b) To remove the old rope, unscrew the screw holding the white drum:

c) Gently lift the white drums so that the spring does not come out:

d) Unroll the old rope from the white drum:

e) Put the new rope in the hole on the side of the white drum and tie a knot:

f) Pull the rope to put the knot back in the drum:

g) Fit the drum back so that the drum notch (see picture 6) is in the spring loop (pic 7) WITHOUT TAKING THE SPRING OUT:

h) Screw the white drum back:

i) Coil the rope around your right hand and hold the drum tightly between two fingers:

j) Turn the cover 8 times clockwise while holding the drum and the rope really tight:

k) Hold the white drum with your thumb and put the rope in the opening:

l) Hold the rope at its end so that it does not coil up completely and let go of the white drum.

Watch out: don't let go of the rope!

m) Fix the handle by passing the rope inside:

n) Pass the retainer ring and tie a knot at the end of the rope.

Release the rope:

o) Insert the ring and the knot in the opening of the handle:

Your Mantis tiller is ready to dig again!

All Mantis tillers: how do I maintain my Mantis tines?

After each use, remove and clean the tines.

Then spray both the tines and the tine shaft with WD-40 (ex: Army Power) or some other light lubricant to protect them from rust.

This will also prevent the tines from "freezing" onto the tine shaft.

2-stroke Mantis tiller: how to drain the mixture before storing it for winter?

It is essential to drain the mixture of the engine before storing it for winter. Stored fuel containing ethanol or MTBE can start to go stale in 30 days and clog the carburettor which can lead to damaging the engine.

This is how to proceed:

a) Get the pipe with the fuel filter out of the fuel tank

Store your 2 stroke 1

b) Press the primer bulb until there is no fuel left

c) Drain the fuel tank
